The American basketball club “Boston Celtics” was founded in 1946 and has an innovative and funny design, and its emblem represents a connection to Celtic-Irish history. The logo represents tactical cunning, confidence in triumph, and a desire for leadership.
What is the Boston Celtics?
The Boston Celtics are one of several franchises in the NBA’s Atlantic Division. It has never left its hometown or changed its original name, which was given in 1946. Wycliffe “Wyc” K. Grousbeck, the team’s general manager and major owner, is an American entrepreneur.

1946–1950
The original design incorporates a shamrock, which is an iconic sign and a long-standing talisman. It’s a white version of the traditional oxalis leaf, also known as the “clover of fortune.” The team’s name appears in a semicircle above it, recalling Celtic traditions. Both parts take the stage and are contained within a green circle with a crimson border.
1950–1960
In the 1950s, the club’s management chose to augment the historical aspect of the insignia by including a jester. Now, the shamrock is only a design on his waistcoat, and the main character is clutching a bent staff that resembles a crooked stick. The man’s feet (probably those of the famed patron Saint Patrick) have laces with large buckles, a smoking pipe in his mouth, and a crown with the inscription “NBA” on his head.
1960–1968
A new variation of the “leprechaun logo” featuring an orange background. Zang Auerbach, the brother of Celtics head coach Red Auerbach, created this design. The leprechaun kneeling grew in size and color. The jumping person’s waistcoat is green and features a mystical shamrock design. The leprechaun appears on an orange background that repeats its shape. The depiction of the leprechaun on the emblem remained unchanged: a pipe in his mouth, a crown with the inscription “NBA,” a stick in his left hand, and white half-boots on his feet.
1968–1976
In 1968, the Boston Celtics logo’s leprechaun motif was modified. The leprechaun now stands, resting against a stick, smirking slyly and twirling a white basketball on his finger. The character is clothed in green slacks, a green Irish hat, black shoes with enormous buckles, a bow tie, and a white vest with a typical Irish pattern – a shamrock, the symbol of the northern state. The Boston Celtics logo grew more colorful, and the background was modified to include a huge red basketball with a black outline and the club’s namesake.
1976–1996
The Boston Celtics logo from this era is green and white, emphasizing the city’s Irish heritage. The joyful person smiles and cleverly winks with his left eye. The half-boots, trousers, and shirts are all white. The vest, cap, and bow tie all feature a shamrock motif. He’s still spinning a basketball with one finger while leaning on a stick. The basketball in the background was changed by a green ring with the words “BOSTON CELTICS” in white.
1996–Present
The Boston Celtics’ current logo is now more colorful and realistic. New details include the inner and outside contours with the team’s nickname, black trousers, white knee socks, and brown shoe buckles. Some components have been updated: the cheerful guy’s waistcoat and hat band on his black bowler hat are now beige, and his stick and basketball are red. The pipe poking out of the right corner of his mouth is the only thing that hasn’t changed.
